The United States has come a long way since 1996 when medical marijuana first became legal in the state of California, followed by Washington and Colorado pushing the trend forward in 2012 with the legalization of marijuana for recreational use.

On November 4, five more states joined the ranks of cannabis legalization, specifically, Arizona, New Jersey, Montana, and South Dakota, which all allow recreational cannabis possession and sales; and lastly, Mississippi, which voted for the approval of marijuana for medical use.

When considering states that have moved forward with cannabis legalization and decriminalization for medical or recreational use over the course of 2020, only four states maintain cannabis as a prohibited substance.

And with a total of 35 states currently cleared for the use of legalized medical cannabis – 15 of which are for recreational purposes – there is good reason to anticipate significant expansion into new markets in 2021 for plant-touching and ancillary businesses.
